Tell us a little bit about what a typical day looks like for you.

My typical day is usually spent in Adobe Premiere Pro editing videos for our clients as well as our own YouTube & LinkedIn platforms. I also oversee a team of creatives and provide insights & critiques on their work as well.

How do you stay passionate in your career?

Passion has never been a problem for me. I’ve had a deep love for art+creativity from a very young age, and with Piper I get to fuse that love with technology and storytelling every single day. Staying focused is the bigger issue – most days I’m bouncing between 3-4 projects at once.

Did you have a traditional path into tech (i.e.: CS/IT degree transitioned into tech job)?

No, I am completely self-taught in my areas of expertise (photography, branding, graphic design, & fine art), and instead of going to college I went through an entrepreneurship program called Praxis. I apprenticed at a digital marketing agency right out of high school and then went on to run my own business, Hannah Phillips Media, in January of 2017. In Feb of 2018, I co-founded Piper Creative with my business partner, Aaron Watson.

Are there any apps, software, or tools you cannot live without?

The Adobe Creative Suite & my Google Calendar.

It’s common knowledge that women and femmes often face obstacles in the tech industry based on their gender. Have you ever had to deal with this type of experience and if so how did you handle it?

While building Piper, there have been a few instances in which my word has not been taken seriously because of my age + gender. In these situations, I’ve found it’s important to be professionally persistent and not waiver in my message. Plus, I’m very fortunate to have an awesome co-founder who always has my back.

What’s your favorite thing about being a part of the #womenintech community?

As a woman who is primarily focused on the long game of not just Piper, but the media & tech industry as a whole, I think we’re setting up future generations of #womenintech with a winning mindset of collaboration>competition. As they say: if you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together.

If applicable, how have you given back to the WIT community?

I do my best to regularly feature female creators & entrepreneurs on my Twitter & Instagram.

What is a piece of advice you would give to others wanting to or currently pursuing a career in tech?

Stray from the beaten path – start creating content about your passions and attend events with people who will force you to level up.

Tell us about a time you felt extremely accomplished in the past year. 

There isn’t necessarily one huge accomplishment in the last year that sticks out to me, I’m moreso just proud of the sheer amount of content I’ve been able to create. Aside from 100+ videos for our Piper channels, I’ve done all of our visual client-facing work and improved immensely as a storyteller.
